Home Heating Tips for Fall

Make sure you are energy efficient when heating your home this fall!

Fall is almost here, pumpkin spice lattes have returned, and kids are boarding the bus to return to school. Now that the nights are getting cooler, it’s time to brush up on home heating tips for fall. In order to keep energy bills low and avoid wasting excess money when you aren’t at home, follow these home heating tips this fall!

Pay Attention to the Air Filter

Changing your air filter every season is an important part of your regular seasonal maintenance. Whenever your air filter is dirty, it will cause your heating system to work harder than it needs to and make your energy bills rise as well. Over time, it can actually causes your air conditioner to last less time compared to a clean air filter. Changing your air filter monthly can save you a surprising 5-15% on your energy bill. This heating tip is one that you can use in the summer as well!

Check Your Thermostat

Do you have a programmable thermostat? If you don’t, our biggest heating tip would be to install one. A programmable thermostat allows you to change the temperature throughout the day without needing to manually do so. Set the heat to turn off when you are at work or to decrease when you are asleep. Adding a couple extra blankets onto your bed is always less expensive in the long run than running the heat all night long.

Seal Up the Cracks

Cold air can slowly seep into your home around your windows and doors if they haven’t been properly sealed in a while. If there are any drafts that you can feel in your home, use rubber weather-stripping to block out the drafts and keep heating bills low. If you don’t want to use weather-stripping, you could also purchase caulk to get the job done. Even if you follow all of our other heating tips but have drafts in your home, they might not make any noticeable difference.
