Heating Systems 101: What You Need to Know About Your Heating Options this Year

If your heating system is older or experiencing issues, it may be time for a heating system upgrade!

If your heating system is older or experiencing issues, it may be time for a heating system upgrade! While there are many heating options available, it can sometimes be difficult to choose one that is best for your family. As you shop for your new heating system before the upcoming winter, consider the basics of each system and how they can work for your home.

Heat Pumps

Because of their energy efficiency, heat pump systems are growing in popularity each year. These pumps naturally heat your home from beneath the ground. Heat pump heating systems take thermal energy from below your home and then pump the heat into your home. This particular heating system can also be used as a cooling system during the warmer months to remove heat from your home and return it below ground. For families that live in areas with extreme cold and hot temperatures, it is especially important to ensure that your heat pump is working efficiently throughout the year.

Furnaces

Furnaces are among some of the most common home heating systems in the country. These systems operate by heating air and circulating it throughout the ductwork of residential or commercial spaces. While furnaces are sometimes known as “forced air” heating systems, they are powered in a variety of ways. These powering methods include oil, gas, and electricity. While updated furnaces include energy efficient options, they are far from the most cost-efficient heating systems available. To install a furnace, you need to have the right ductwork in your home.

Boilers and Radiant Heating Systems

Boilers are heating systems that operate on heated water to circulate heat through your home. These systems use either propane, gas, or electricity to heat the water, and then distribute that heat using a radiant heating system. Radiant heat systems consist of radiators, baseboard heaters, and panels in various parts of the home, even under floor tiles! Although boilers are often more expensive to install than furnaces, they are incredibly energy-efficient in heating a home.
