Is your furnace a little bit worse for wear? If your home isn’t heating up like it should, your furnace might be the culprit. While we always recommend giving the professionals at Ambient Cooling & Heating a call before diving in yourself, here are some basic tips to help fix a furnace.
Many furnace problems occur as a result of a lack of maintenance. There are simple solutions that can help preserve your furnace. Vacuum out the area surrounding your furnace’s blower. Next, slide out the fan unit and clean around each blade using a toothbrush. Finally, vacuum out the area with the brush attachment on your vacuum. If you aren’t comfortable completing your annual maintenance on your own, call the professionals at Ambient Cooling & Heating.
If you are concerned that your furnace has a gas leak, it’s important to take care of that as quickly as possible. If you smell natural gas inside of your home, do not light any matches or turn on or off any electrical appliances. If the gas odor is very noticeable, leave your house, leaving the door open, and turn off the gas supply valve. Call your local gas utility company or the fire department from across the street and wait until they can check through your home before returning. Be cautious when handling a leak; they are very serious problems and can be deadly!
If you have an older furnace with a pilot light and it isn’t staying lit, the problem might be with the thermocouple, the pilot orifice, or the flame itself. Start by cleaning out the orifice by using a thin piece of wire. Always turn off the gas before starting any of these repairs and shut off the circuit breaker. If your pilot light isn’t big enough to stay lit, adjust the flame adjustment screw to get the right amount of light.
