How to Keep Your Home a Comfortable Temperature this Fall

How to Keep Your Home a Comfortable Temperature this Fall

Blinds can be kept closed during the hottest hours of the day to help reduce the heat that the sun creates.

The temperatures may be dropping slowly, but there is still plenty of time for a few more heat waves before winter sets in for good. If you are working to reduce your energy bills and keep your air conditioner use to a minimum, there are plenty of tips you can try to keep your home cooler during these last scorching days.

Keep Blinds & Curtains Closed

Start by keeping sunlight, and it’s accompanying heat out. Blinds can be kept closed during the hottest hours of the day to help reduce the heat that the sun creates.

Install Low Heat Lighting

You may be surprised by the amount of heat released by your lighting. Opt for LED, energy efficient and low-heat bulbs that can reduce the amount of heat generated. Traditional incandescent bulbs can produce a significant amount of heat. Additionally, keep lights off when not in use to reduce heat and energy use.

Cook Wisely

As you are cooking this fall, pay attention to how much extra heat is released as you are using your stove. If possible, use your vent hood, or invest in a small air exchanging can to help pull the hot air out of the kitchen while cooking. You will also want to use pot lids as much as possible, and use the oven light to look inside rather than opening it to check on your cooking. If you have access to outdoor cooking options, such as a grill or full outdoor kitchen, making use of these items can help keep indoor temperatures down.

Minimize Electronic Use

If you’re continually running video game systems, tv’s, and more electronics you can create more heat than you’d expect. Reducing use of these items can help decrease indoor temperatures and give you more excuses to spend time enjoying the weather outside.

Repair Windows and Doors

Lastly, check all your windows and doors for gaps and holes. If your windows are loose and there are gaps not only will your air conditioning escape, but your heat come winter will as well. Improving your window seals and adding a layer of window film can help decrease your temperature issues significantly.
